[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] Kraft Heinz has announced that it sees Breakstone’s business being sold and is considering weighing its options by hiring the Royal Bank of Canada to review its options in the matter.

The review, which will likely eventually result in Kraft Heinz eventually putting Breakstone’s in the market, is seen by many as the company’s bid to reevaluate its company’s dairy business, and, as CNBC points out, a likely decision that came after Kraft Heinz also decided to sell its Maxwell House coffee business.

Breasktone’s, which makes its bank on selling cottage cheese, butter, and sour cream, could fetch about $400 million in the market, considering that its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization already amounts to at least $50 million. With dairy companies like Dean Foods, Saputo, or even the Dairy Farmers of America in the dairy business, selling Breakstone’s good even be a good move.

But considering the challenge of more people actually distancing themselves from buying any cheese products and non-dairy, the dairy industry is struggling with more and more customers turning to alternatives like oat, soy, and almond milk.

This has resulted in about a $1.4 billion cheese surplus as reported by the US Department of Agriculture. This is accompanied by several other dairy producers and brands flirting with lower market performances. For instance, Dean Foods, which owns Organic Valley, DairyPure sour cream, and TruMoo milk, reported back that their sales have actually fallen to 68 percent over the past year.

In addition to that, Dean Foods has also had to suffer net loss as they continue to stay upright in the market, shedding about $3.63 per share for 2018 on top of a 0.5 percent loss the year prior.

Compare this to a more boosted cottage cheese sales numbers in the 1970s when Americans would eat an average of 5 pounds of cottage cheese per year, as reported by the USDA.
