[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] United States President Donald Trump warned members of Venezuela's military on Monday that those who remain on the side of socialist President Nicolas Maduro are putting their futures and lives at risk, urging them to permit humanitarian aid to enter the country.

Trump said that if the socialist military does not cease their support for Maduro, they will not "find safe harbor, no easy exit and no way out. You’ll lose everything.” Maduro criticized the American president's speech, saying that it was "Nazi-style" and that Trump acted as though he owns Venezuela and that its citizens are his slaves, Reuters reported.

The Republican president warned the armed forces of Venezuela to not harm Juan Guaido, whom he has offered strong support to, or other opposition politicians. Trump urged the military to accept the National Assembly leader’s offer of amnesty and called on them to allow food, medicine, and other supplies to enter the country.

“We seek a peaceful transition of power but all options are open,” Trump said. According to Reuters, the statement was another hint of Trump's repeated insistence that there is still military options despite the fact that most Latin America experts believe that such a move is unlikely.

The US had directly communicated with members of Venezuela's military and urged them to abandon Maduro, as per a statement of a senior White House official. However, only a few military officers have so far turned against the socialist president.

Guaido, who proclaimed himself as the country's leader last month, said that humanitarian aid will reach Venezuela through neighboring countries via land and sea on Saturday. The US has sent tons of aid that are piling up on Colombia's border with Venezuela as Maduro refused to let the help in.

Maduro calls the aid a US-orchestrated show, denying that there is a crisis in his country despite many Venezuelans' lack of access to food and medicine. “We will not make of honorable Venezuela a Venezuela of beggars,” he said in televised comments on Monday. “We will not accept it.”

The socialist president said Venezuela already received "humanitarian assistance" on a day-to-day basis. For instance, he said Russia was shipping 300 tonnes of aid to the country via plane on Wednesday, although he clarified that it was not a donation but supplies that Venezuela had paid for.
